Excerpt: The future of medicine

The Jacobs Institute, a nonprofit medical innovation center launched by Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs, tapped a team of journalists and futurists to predict where medicine will go in the next quarter-century. Below, some predictions from the recently published “Future of Medicine” report, available in full at

In 5 years: “The FDA will consider a drug’s price in its approval process, accelerating drug and price competition.”

In 10 years: “Virtual reality headsets for Alzheimer’s patients will be used daily to stave off the disease, with light therapy reawakening the brain’s natural immune cells and setting them to work.”

In 20 years: “Transplants of organs from anybody will be possible by using CRISPR technology to tweak the immune receptors that identify transplanted organs as foreign.”
